AlexNet wins ImageNet and ignites the deep-learning era

AlexNet, a deep convolutional neural network trained on GPUs, won the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge by a dramatic margin, cutting the top-5 error rate far below competing methods. The victory is widely credited with launching the modern deep-learning boom in computer vision. (ILSVRC 2012 results were announced in autumn 2012; the exact day is approximate.)
